The Pontifex Maximus is our first fountain pen model. In Latin, Pontifex means "bridge-builder". Made in Belgium from Japanese ebonite and featuring a "Japanese eyedropper" filling system, this oversized fountain pen is a well balanced writing instrument and offers a generous canvas for urushi and maki-e artwork.
In the Our Own Myths series, just like the masters of old, we reference the stories of today, our own myths.
Okina-no-Men means 'Old man's mask', an ancient mask in Japanese Noh theatre. Okina is a short play, more a ritual than a play, in which the shite (main actor) blesses the land. It is the only play in which the mask is put on on stage and in which, upon donning the mask, the actor becomes a god. Okina's face and his gentle smile remind us of an old friend. The pen is also a humble tribute to the only surviving fountain pen attributed to the legendary maki-e master Matsuda Gonroku, who chose to depict the Hannya mask, which by contrast expresses violent emotions. Our good-natured Okina-no-Men fountain pen is executed in togidashi and taka-maki-e.
