In the 19th century science was often referred to as natural philosophy: there was no clear distinction between science and philosophy. Scientific instruments (chronometers, slide rules, scales etc.) were called philosophical instruments. Today perhaps the ultimate philosophical instruments are handwriting tools, instruments of inner exploration and quiet dialogue.
Philosophical Instruments aspires to create timeless objects demonstrating a deep passion for arts & crafts and resulting from bridge-building collaborations between the finest artists and craftsmen in their field. Our writing instruments are made in Belgium and decorated by Japanese lacquer artists. We strive for technical excellence and writing comfort as well as timeless elegance.
The first Philosophical Instruments fountain pen, the Pontifex Maximus, was presented at the Dutch Pen Show in 2025. Philosophical Instruments will offer a limited quantity of high quality writing instruments every year.
